CHAPTER SIXTEEN
From the security, you would have thought they had four crazed, psychopathic terrorists who had kidnapped the Royal Family: that we had a hidden army waiting for the right moment to pounce and whisk the four of us off to freedom.
We were driven up to the prison entrance and got out of the car to find ourselves surrounded by prison staff with dogs. We were taken, one by one, through two huge gates, each of which was closed behind us, before our handcuffs were removed. Then we were escorted into the prison itself, through three steel doors, to an L-shaped wing, split into two levels. The top one was smaller, like a cage, and enclosed in wire.
This was part of E Wing. Only ten high-risk prisoners at a time were held there. And they were not just top-security, Category A – they were Double A, meaning that they never left the wing, and no other prisoners were allowed into it. There was never an excuse to leave our part of the wing, because it had everything you needed. Even if a prisoner needed his teeth looked at, a dentist came to the wing.
You had to be nuts even to think escape was possible: we were watched twenty-four hours a day – even when we were in the toilet – by cameras, operated from a bunker from which the gates could be opened and closed electronically. And every window was surrounded by razor-sharp barbed wire. Anyone foolish enough to try to climb out and jump the thirty feet to the ground would have cut himself to pieces before the guards hauled him back. Even if he, miraculously, got out of the window and jumped, he would probably break a leg or two before the dogs pounced.
If I thought the security was over the top and unnecessary, the governor and his staff certainly did not. They were still recovering from a riot six months before, and the last thing they needed was the Kray Firm stirring up trouble. Everyone was on edge. They did not know us, only what they had read in the papers and heard on radio and television. But they expected the worst.
The ten of us had two screws responsible for each of us. There was never any physical contact between us and them. They just sat on the landings, drinking tea and reading books. There was seldom any familiarity. Occasionally a screw would call me by my first name, but I never felt comfortable with that; I suspected an ulterior motive and I could not afford to drop my guard.
Above our level was the cage known as the Monsters’ Hideaway – the closely guarded refuge of sex offenders, such as the Moors Murderer, Ian Brady, who were locked away for their own protection under Rule 43. There were six of them up there and, not surprisingly, the evil Brady was the most hated. Many attempts had been made to kill him, not only by physical attacks, but
